The Regional Transportation Authority’s partner jurisdictions are working hard to construct roadway improvements throughout the Tucson metro area, including major widening projects on South Houghton Road and on East Broadway Boulevard, plus construction of the new Downtown Links roadway to connect Barraza-Aviation Parkway with Interstate 10 through the downtown area.
Behind the scenes, a different effort is underway with the jurisdictional partners working to complete the final design, permitting, right-of-way acquisition and utility relocation activities needed to set the stage for the next round of road work.
Here are some of the RTA roadway corridor projects that will begin construction in 2022:
Grant Road, from Alvernon Way to Swan Road (Phases 3 and 4)
Anticipated to begin in summer 2022.
Details: This project is a continuation of the improvements that have already been completed from Oracle Road to Park Avenue and, specifically, will improve the eastern segment of Grant Road from Palo Verde Avenue to Venice Avenue by widening the road to three lanes in both directions. In addition to the enhanced multimodal elements and improved functionality of the roadway, a key improvement for drivers will be new indirect left turns at the major intersections with Grant Road.

22nd Street from Kino Boulevard to Tucson Boulevard
Anticipated to begin in spring 2022.
Details: This project will widen 22nd Street to three lanes in each direction, add new bridges over the railroad tracks, and include intersection improvements along 22nd Street to promote mobility, capacity and safety. This is the second phase of the 22nd Street widening project that spans from I-10 to Tucson Boulevard, with phase 1 consisting of a new intersection at Kino and 22nd completed in 2015.

Silverbell from Goret to El Camino del Cerro
Anticipated to begin in summer/fall 2022.
Details: In phase two of the Silverbell widening project, the road will be transformed into a four-lane divided roadway with a raised median, bike lanes, sidewalks and a multi-use path. Landscaping, art and drainage improvements also are part of the project. The section from Goret to Grant was completed in 2017.

Sunset from I-10 to River Road
Projected start date is TBD.
Details: The final phase of the Sunset connection project will build a new roadway connecting I-10 to River Road. The new road will consist of a four-lane roadway with a raised median, bike lanes, sidewalks and a multi-use path. Landscaping, art and drainage improvements are part of the project. The section from Silverbell to I-10 was completed in 2017.
