PAG data scientists’ work lands in academic journals

As you drive around the region, you probably don’t think about why roadways are built the way that they are or what went into the timing of a traffic signal or even why parks and other amenities are located where they are.

The data scientists and other experts at Pima Association of Governments do think about these things and work to find ways to make the infrastructure we all rely on more effective and efficient. 

The team of data scientists at PAG recently were co-authors of four papers published in peer-reviewed journals that explored ways to improve regional traffic management, mitigate traffic congestion, and optimize locations for proposed amenities and infrastructure. 

The research the PAG team published can help further PAG’s work in the area of congestion management by promoting cost-effective decision-making to help regional agencies plan.

The findings can support PAG’s regional long-range transportation planning efforts by translating data-driven analysis into practical guidance for more efficient, reliable, and safer mobility decisions. Together, these studies promote cost-effective decision-making by helping agencies identify projects, strategies, and investments that can improve mobility, safety, and system performance. 

The team at PAG includes Hyunsoo Noh, Ph.D., Data Science Administrator; Ryan Hatch, Senior Transportation Data Scientist; James Tokishi, Transportation Data Science Manager; Xiaobo Ma, Ph.D., Senior Transportation Data Scientist.

The four papers they collaborated on were published in the journals, Transportation Research Record, Cities: The International Journal of Urban Policy and Planning, and Journal of Transportation Engineering.
