Higher gas prices lead more folks to carpool

Although gas prices have come down a bit, they are still higher than most would like. With uncertainty around the world, many folks are looking for ways to save money on their commute.

While many people are looking for new solutions, one old favorite is returning to favor, the carpool.

According to Market Reports World, there was a 15% increase in carpools for corporate employees in 2025 and that number is expected to climb in 2026.

That is what the West Coast-based carpooling platform Scoop was seeing. The company saw a 40% increase in carpools from February to March of this year.

This is not a recent trend. Every time gas prices go up significantly, Americans counter by carpooling more. Studies in 2012, 2013 and 2022 show the same trends that we see this year.

Carpooling is a great way to reduce the impact of rising gas prices. By sharing a ride with others, you split the cost. According to rideshare.org the average driver can save $1,000-$1,500 a year.

Those savings take into account splitting costs for fuel, and parking, while also cutting down on vehicle maintenance.

Want to carpool but need people who work near you to share a ride?  Sun Rideshare is a commuter assistance program offered by Pima Association of Governments that helps people find carpool and vanpool partners.

Anyone in the greater Tucson region can sign up for Sun Rideshare, which offers an online database for people interested in seeking carpool or vanpool partners to save money or contribute to a healthy environment
